Electronic Navigational Chart
An Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) consists of digitized data which conforms to the IHO’s S-57 ENC Product Specification. It records all relevant charted features necessary for safe navigation, including coastlines, bathymetry, buoys, lights, and so on. This is the most common type of electronic chart products which Composer is typically used to display, create and update. IHO website - click here.
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) defines hydrography as “the branch of applied sciences which deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as with the prediction of their change over time, for the primary purpose of safety of navigation and in support of all other marine activities, including economic development, security and defence, scientific research, and environmental protection”. The IHO S-57 Standard is the standard for digital hydrographic data exchange, which is used for the exchange of digital hydrographic data between national hydrographic offices and for its distribution to manufacturers, mariners and other data users. S-57 is the Standard used by official Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) products. The S-57 Standard was defined as a civilian standard for creating electronic charts for commercial navigational purposes. IHO website - click here.
