FREE DEMONSTRATION COURSE
This is a short demonstration of the first unit of the full ENC Production online training course. It is designed to give you an idea of the content, appearance and the different types of media used in that course. This training course is designed to provide learners with a good basic understanding of how to use the CARIS S-57 Composer version 2.2.1 software product to create and update International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) S-57 Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs). Please review the following general information carefully before proceeding with the course.

PART A: BASIC INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSER (Units T-1 to T-6)
Unit T-1: Introduction to Composer

CARIS S-57 Composer, or Composer for short, is a new interactive desktop editor software program which is used to create, edit, validate, manage and update electronic chart products.
This course looks at using Composer to create Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs).
Watch this introductory video to give you a first look at Composer's workflow and basic functionality.
Now watch the other videos and complete the accompanying training exercises to learn about Composer's user interface and how to get help for Composer.

Part A: Basic Introduction to Composer (continued)
Unit T-2: Basic Composer Functionality
[Estimated time: 1.0hr]
Composer's basic functionality is introduced in this unit. This includes commonly used tools to:
- view and select features;
- control the default appearance of features;
- and create display filters.
Watch the following videos and complete the training exercises to give you a first look at Composer's workflow and basic functionality.
In the full course, learners can now:
- review the information in the introductory pages;
- watch the next set of videos;
- perform the associated step-by-step exercises; and
- check what you have learned by completing a short quiz.
These are not included here in this demonstration course.

ENC Production with CARIS S-57 Composer (continued)
In the full course, learners can continue progressing through the course unit by unit, referring to the introductory text and screen captures, watching the related videos, performing the step-by-step exercises with sample datasets, and by completing short multiple choice quizzes at the end of each unit.
The full course is divided into three parts, each with a set of related training units:
- Part A: Basic Introduction (6 units in total)
- Part B: ENC Production (17 units)
- Part C: ENC Updates (4 units)
At the end of the full course, if learners complete each of the required steps and achieve the required pass mark in the quizzes, a course completion certificate is issued to learners.

The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) defines hydrography as “the branch of applied sciences which deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as with the prediction of their change over time, for the primary purpose of safety of navigation and in support of all other marine activities, including economic development, security and defence, scientific research, and environmental protection”.
